New Canadian Kid by Dennis Foon
One of Canada’s most widely produced plays for young audiences, New Canadian Kid tells the story of Nick, a young boy who moves to Canada with his family from a fictitious country called Homeland. In his new home, Nick encounters bullying and racism and struggles with what it’s like to be different. The language barrier between Nick and his fellow students is depicted using a unique approach where Nick and his family speak English while the others speak gibberish, allowing audience members to fully appreciate the immigrant experience from the newcomer's point of view.
The Lottery* by Brainerd Duffield
Based on Shirley Jackson’s short story, The Lottery is a graphic dramatization of a small town’s annual tradition which, as audience members soon discover, is a violent ritual demonstrating the inhumanity and mob mentality of its residents. The story explores the darker side of our collective identities as a way to unveil the consequences of conformity, where individuals become complicit in the most deplorable of acts.
