Le matin du 1er août 1966, le campus de l’Université du Texas à Austin sombra dans l’horreur lorsqu’un psychopathe fortement armé s’installa au poste d’observation de la tour de l’horloge de l’université et que, pendant 90 minutes, il se mit à tirer sur tout ce qui bougeait. Au total, seize personnes furent tuées et trois douzaines d’autres blessées avant que le tireur, l’ex-Marine de 25 ans Charles Whitman, soit abattu à son tour.
Le réalisateur Keith Maitland présente TOWER comme un récit oral hyper cinématographique, avec de jeunes acteurs lisant des transcriptions d’interviews des survivants du massacre en voix hors champ, créant la trame de fond d’un brillant amalgame de reconstitutions animées et artistiques, d’archives télévisuelles, de photographies et de représentations en rotoscopie des témoins eux-mêmes. Il utilise ces dispositifs avec brio, racontant le récit pratiquement en temps réel, plongeant le spectateur dans une indicible panique, un chaos et une terreur qui se dévoilent dans toute la poignante immédiateté de la situation.»

“On the morning of August 1, 1966, Austin’s University of Texas campus abruptly became a place of horror when a heavily armed psychopath positioned himself on an observation deck of the school’s clock tower and, for the 90 minutes that followed, opened fire at every living thing in his sights. By the end, 16 were dead and three dozen wounded before the gunman, 25-year-old ex-Marine Charles Whitman, was overtaken and killed.
Director Keith Maitland constructs TOWER as a hyper-cinematic oral history of sorts, with young actors reading interview transcriptions from survivors of the massacre in voice-over, set to an inspired combination of artfully animated recreations, newsreel footage, photographs and rotoscoped depictions of the speakers themselves. He uses these devices to brilliant effect, telling the story in near real-time, plunging the viewer into the centre of absolute panic, chaos and fear as the situation unfolds with gripping immediacy."
