Julie, a young Afro-Canadian screenwriter, is retelling
To Kill a Mockingbird.
This time the story will be told from the perspective of …
A Black woman.
Calpurnia.
The Finch family’s maid.
In pursuit of perspective to cure her writer’s block, Julie upturns an important family dinner party. Hilarity and tension ensue in this satirical comedy that takes a caustic look at class, race, identity and family dynamics under the roof of a wealthy Jamaican Canadian home.
Calpurnia is a part of Black Theatre Workshop's Discovery Series play development initiative that promotes the unseen work of emerging and established Black Canadian playwrights. This event supports Black Theatre Workshop’s mandate to reflect culturally diverse Canadian voices.
