JOHN REA, 'Reorchestration: 'drag and drop it is not''
"This talk addresses subjects related to composition, not that least of which is: What does it mean to reorchestrate, to re-score, a work especially when it is not your own? It then moves to my experiences with transcription, arrangement, orchestration, and reorchestration itself. A brief discussion of a conceptual metaphor – ‘source-to-target’ mapping – precedes a look at J.S. Bach’s strategies with regard to his own work on Vivaldi. Finally the talk focuses on my rendering of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, op.7 in 1992-95, and my most recent project, premiered last March, on Berg’s Drei Orchesterstücke, op.6. Concluding remarks deal with the issue of authenticity, among other things."
