"Iceberg Alley, Climate Change, and Canada's Grey Resources"

Iceberg Alley is an area that extends from the western coast of Greenland to Baffin Island and further south past the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. Over the past two decades, its icebergs have become a sought after commodity in the production of vodka, beer, and luxury-branded waters. By drawing on historical research and fieldwork across communities in Iceberg Alley, Rafico Ruiz examines icebergs as an emerging “grey resource”: due to glacial melt they lie within the ethical shadow cast by anthropogenic climate change and they influence the safe operation of oil and gas installations in the North Atlantic. Ruiz considers how the commodification of natural phenomena highlights the ambiguous ethical and environmental modalities underpinning the consolidation of a northern resource.

Le couloir d’icebergs est une région qui s’étend de la côte occidentale du Groenland jusqu’à l’île de Baffin et, plus au sud, jusqu’aux Grands Bancs de Terre-Neuve. Au cours des vingt dernières années, ses icebergs sont devenus un produit de consommation recherché dans la production de vodkas, bières et eaux de luxe. En tirant profit de recherches historiques et de travaux sur le terrain avec les diverses communautés de la région, Rafico Ruiz considère les icebergs comme une « ressource grise » en croissance : avec la fonte des glaces, ils évoluent dans la zone d’ombre éthique projetée par les changements climatiques d’origine anthropique et influent sur la sécurité des installations d’exploitation gazière et pétrolière dans l’Atlantique Nord. Ruiz s’intéresse à la façon dont la marchandisation des phénomènes naturels met en lumière les modalités éthiques et environnementales ambiguës qui sous-tendent la consolidation d’une ressource nordique.
