Composer and McGill alumnus Bryan Jacbos will present a talk titled 'Music for Humans and Machines'. All are welcome to attend this event.
"San Diego-based composer, performer, and sound artist Bryan Jacobs’ work focuses on interactions between live performers, mechanical instruments, and computers. His pieces are often theatrical in nature, pitting blabber-mouthed fanciful showoffs against timid reluctants. Sounds are playfully organized and often mimic patterns found in human dialogue. Hand-built electromechanical instruments provide a link between traditional acoustic instruments and computer-generated electronic sounds diffused through loudspeakers. These instruments live dual lives as time-based concert works and non-time-based gallery works.
This talk will focus on a number of recent compositions and sound art works involving newly invented computer-controlled instruments, and will discuss the artistic impetus behind these works and the manner in which they were constructed."
