Directed by Fath Allah Laghrizmi, this group brings together talented musicians, including Abou Abdelmajid Khalil, who heads the group Bambara Trans, Mohamed Raky and Mohamed Idabbou. They’ll introduce you to this special music of the Maghreb, Gnawa, which has often influenced other styles of music such as jazz-fusion, blues and reggae.
Gnawa music is a rich North African repertoire of African spiritual songs and rhythms that combine ritual poetry with traditional music and dancing. Gnawa is an ancestral music, which is an integral part of the Magreb folklore, and whose instruments are the oldest, such as the three-stringed bass lute known as the guembri or hajhouj. The music is performed at derderbas, communal nights of celebration dedicated to prayer and healing guided by the Gnawa Maallem, or master musician, and their group of musicians and dancers.
The leader of Marocouleurs, Maallem Fath-Allah Laghrizmi, is one of the youngest masters of Gnawa music.
