Cinquante ampoules, pendant en grappe du plafond, émettent une intense lumière au centre de la pièce sombre. Cette image austère, pour le public qui s’engage dans la salle, constitue leur première expérience d’une œuvre qui est à la fois installation et performance interactive. 50 bulbs de Hee Ran Lee explore la dichotomie du « je » et de l’« autre », et les insécurités résultant de la marginalisation culturelle. Élevée au féminin dans la structure patriarcale de la Corée du Sud, puis ayant vécu de longues périodes à l’étranger en minorité culturelle, Hee Ran Lee a axé sa recherche sur l’Autre et la relation de celui-ci avec la conformité et la dominance. Les ampoules, dans leur fragilité, créent un espace tendu et précaire dans lequel le public se trouve partie prenante dans la conclusion de l’œuvre.
Hee Ran Lee est une artiste de la performance dont l’œuvre présente des environnements immersifs qui permettent aux spectateurs d’examiner en profondeur la construction d’un espace et d’un temps.

La quête identitaire est souvent nourrie par un besoin de trouver un lieu auquel nous appartenons. En 2017, la notion de lieu sera capitale au Canada. Les récits ayant particulièrement trait à l’appartenance et à la cohésion sociale revêtiront une importance cruciale. Prendre place est une série portant sur les arts performatifs qui réunit sous un même toit huit artistes exceptionnels issus des quatre coins du monde au moment précis où la notion de lieu devient singulièrement pertinente. Lieu de résidence, géographie, attachement territorial. Communauté. La série Prendre place a en outre été conçue pour faire référence aux droits civils et aux mouvements de libération qui ont trait à l’inclusion. Il s’agit de prendre sa place au moment où la notion d’équité est toute aussi déterminante. Intersection, identité sociale et frontières indéfinies.

Fifty light bulbs hang together from the ceiling, emitting a strong glow into the center of a dark room. As the audience enters the space, this stark image is their initial experience of a piece that is both installation and interactive performance. Hee Ran Lee*’s *50 Bulbs explores the dichotomy of “I” versus “other”, and the insecurities consequent to cultural marginalization. Growing up female in the patriarchal power structure of South Korea, as well as living extensive periods away from home as a cultural minority, has provoked Lee’s research on “otherness” and how it relates to conformity and dominance. The fragility of the lightbulbs create a tense and precarious space as the audience find themselves integral to the work’s conclusion.

The search for who we are is often fuelled by a need to find a place where we belong. The notion of place in Canada in 2017 will be significant. Narratives particular to belonging and to social cohesion will be critical. Taking Place is a performance art series conceived as a means to group together eight significant performance artists from around the globe under one roof precisely at a time when the notion of place becomes especially relevant. Place as address, as geography, as territorial attachment. Community. Taking Place was also conceived as a means to reference civil rights and liberation movements, of inclusiveness. Taking one’s place at a time when the notion of equity is equally as climacteric. Intersection, social identity and indefinite borders.
