“With truth in the music, who can refuse it..who keeps the fuse lit?"
James Yancey - “Dilla Dawg is the Illest”
The essence of Black music is on Wax and as much they want to herald, degrade or “explain” our music..the Blood, Sweat & Tears are ingrained deeply into the grooves. We went from Delta Blues of the swampy plantations made into Race Records on 78rpm; to Gospel Hymns morphing into RnB on the Chitlin’ Circuit selling out the 45 single; to Chuck Berry’s and Big Mama Thornton’s Rock-n-Roll stolen by Elvis (and later Zepellin), to Satchmo being ridiculed (until Cool Jazz became cool) and Al Jolson blackface tirades applauded in packed theaters; before James Brown lit up the Apollo, Motown hit the Charts, Quincy showed his genius and No Limit went from a Mom-n-Pop shop to a label that got that Ca$h Money and the Bad&Boujee Golden Globes shout out.
The sociopolitics did not stop there though, Detroit’s Techno, Chicago House, Tipper Gore’s HipHop Advisory, New Jack Swing and Neo-Soul, all the way to Macklemore’s Grammy award.
“They took us away from Africa, with the intention to steal our Culture”
Burning Spear - “The Invasion”
Black Music is also what has emanated from the Coasts of Dakar, Lagos & Bamako and came crashing into the shores of Cuba,Colombia and Brazil. The insulated genius jazz fostered in Ethiopia who share King Selassie with the Dub Deities in Jamaica. Right before another month of our history is condensed in front of our eyes, let’s enjoy our sonical Roots with our ears on the only format that can’t be denied and that holds all the history: BLACK WAX!
