Prendre place est une série portant sur les arts performatifs qui réunit sous un même toit huit artistes exceptionnels issus des quatre coins du monde au moment précis où la notion de lieu devient singulièrement pertinente. La série Prendre place a en outre été conçue pour faire référence aux droits civils et aux mouvements de libération qui ont trait à l’inclusion. De quelle manière encourage-t-on la honte au sein de sociétés qui reproduisent les relations fondées sur le capitalisme et le pouvoir ? Comment utilise-t-on cette honte dans l'intention de marginaliser certains groupes et d'exercer un contrôle sur le corps ? Dans The Sign, Chun Hua Catherine Dong explore la culture visuelle de la honte en mettant en scène seize artistes féminines portant masque et corde autour de la taille, déambulant et esquissant une série de gestes symboliques. The Sign s'appuie sur l'idéologie personnelle de l'artiste, vision selon laquelle le corps est politique, et cherche à déconstruire la honte du corps de la femme au moyen de gestes et de la complicité des spectateurs.
Native de Chine, Dong pratique les arts performatifs, la photographie et la vidéo. Ses oeuvres ont été présentées partout dans le monde dans le cadre d'expositions et de festivals consacrés aux arts performatifs.

The search for who we are is often fuelled by a need to find a place where we belong. The notion of place in Canada in 2017 will be significant. Narratives particular to belonging and to social cohesion will be critical. Taking Place is a performance art series conceived as a means to group together eight significant performance artists from around the globe under one roof precisely at a time when the notion of place becomes especially relevant. Place as address, as geography, as territorial attachment. Community. Taking Place was also conceived as a means to reference civil rights and liberation movements, of inclusiveness. Taking one’s place at a time when the notion of equity is equally as climacteric. Intersection, social identity and indefinite borders.

How is shame encouraged within societies that reproduce capitalist and power relations ? How is it used as a tool to marginalize certain groups and exert control over the body ? Chun Hua Catherine Dong’s new work The Sign poses questions while exploring the visual culture of shame. Sixteen female performers stand in a row, each one wearing a mask and a rope around her waist, moving slowly through a series of symbolic gestures. Derived from Dong’s personal ideology that the body is political, The Sign seeks to deconstruct shame in relation to the female body using gestures, movements and audience participation.
Originally from China, based in Montréal, Dong is a visual artist working with performance art, photography and video. Her work aims to transform everyday political life into art, and has been showcased internationally in numerous exhibitions
and performance art festivals.
