Experimental film can be difficult to define due to its expanded and constantly evolving nature, uninfluenced by formal constraints and rules.
During this theoretical and analytical workshop, an overview of the creative movements in experimental film will be presented to the participants, from the history of the genre to current practices. Using examples from selected works, this workshop will give participants a better understanding of the genre, while presenting various techniques, methods and approaches to creating an experimental work. A selection of works both by established and emerging film and video artists will be presented, followed by a group discussion.
Sonya Stefan is a contemporary dancer and a media artist who creates hybrid work. She is co-founder of groop*index, a Montreal-based visual arts collective that explores expanded cinema specifically focusing on giving agency to contemporary dancers. She also researches the performative and collective relationship of the Internet creating lo-fi experimental video works as well as having a visual art practice creating co-authored installations. She has performed her work at museums and several international festivals. She is presently co-organizing Festival Ibrida*Pluri with Samuel Bobony and Guillaume Vallée in collaboration with artist-run centre Eastern Bloc on April 21-22-23, 2016, presenting dance, visual and sound artists under the same platform.
