En 2005, Rafael arrive au Canada et sa réputation en tant que compositeur et directeur musical est rapidement établie au sein de la communauté artistique. Rafael obtient un bac à l’Université de Montréal en 2008 ainsi qu’une maîtrise à McGill en 2010.
Sur la scène canadienne, il joue avec des artistes de renom tels que Jane Bunnett, Joe LaBarbera et Oliver Jones. Le musicien partage également la scène avec de multiples figures internationales dont Terri Lyne Carrington, Nate Smith, Francisco Mela et Greg Osby. Rafael compte nombre d’activités en tant que leader tant sur le plan national qu’international. Il se produit entre autres en Europe aux festivals de jazz de North Sea, Montreux et Bremen, en plus de participer au festival de jazz Bean Town de Boston et Rochester de New York aux États-Unis.
Son premier disque intitulé Life Directions est acclamé par la communauté musicale canadienne et remporte les prix OPUS, Archambault et Radio-Canada. Son deuxième album intitulé Drawing est également nominé aux prix de l’ADISQ et aux JUNO dans la catégorie meilleur album de jazz contemporain.

In 2005, Rafael comes to Canada and its reputation as a composer and musical director is quickly established within the arts community. Rafael gets a bachelor’s degree from University of Montreal in 2008 and a master’s degree from McGill University in 2010.
He plays with renowned artists such as Jane Bunnett, Joe LaBarbera, and Oliver Jones. The musician also shares the stage with many international figures including Terri Lyne Carrington, Nate Smith, Francisco Mela, and Greg Osby. Rafael is an active as a leader both nationally and internationally. He performs in Europe at the North Sea, Montreux and Bremen jazz festivals as well as in the United States at the Bean Town (Boston) and the Rochester jazz festivals (New York).
His first album entitled Life Directions is highly celebrated by the Canadian music community and has wins awards such as: OPUS, Archambault and Radio-Canada. His second album entitled Drawing is also nominated by ADISQ and JUNO awards for best contemporary jazz album of the year.
