As in days of yore, some fourty teams take on the river between Île-aux-Coudres and Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive. Before the ferry service was launched in 1959, the island-dwellers carried mail, medicine and supplies over the ice in an 8-kilometre canoe trip to the mainland and back. The Grande traversée competition, held yearly since 1991, is a tribute to these hardy souls.Video
