Enflammé par l’espoir d’un monde plus égalitaire, Beethoven dédie d’abord sa symphonie Héroïque à Napoléon qui incarne selon lui l’anti-monarchie. Il rayera plus tard la dédicace dans un élan de profonde déception en apprenant que ce dernier s’est fait couronner empereur.

Driven by a desire for a more just world, Beethoven originally dedicated his “Eroica” symphony to Napoleon, whom he believed embodied the anti-monarchist ideals of the French Revolution. However, when Napoleon crowned himself emperor, the composer later scratched out the dedication in disgust.
