Joan Fontcuberta | “The purge of the images”
En cette époque où un grand nombre d’images circulent et fascinent précisément pour ce qu’elles ont de toxique et de désagréable, Snyder effectue ce qui pourrait être considéré, au sens clinique, comme une purge. Dans son exposition, il en fait la preuve par la reconnaissance fondamentale de la matière première de l’information visuelle (encre et papier, pellicule, bande magnétique, algorithmes et pixels) et par l’élaboration de rhétoriques de persuasion.
L’intervention du commissaire Joan Fontcuberta traitera de son interprétation des oeuvres de l’exposition.
Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelone, 1955) a développé une pratique tant artistique que théorique axée sur les conflits entre nature, technologie et vérité. Sa production artistique a fait l’objet d’expositions individuelles au Museum of Modern Art à New York et au Chicago Art Institute, entre autres, et ses œuvres font partie de plusieurs collections d’institutions, notamment le Metropolitan Museum of Art à New York, le Musée des beaux-arts du Canada à Ottawa et le Centre Georges-Pompidou à Paris. Il a remporté le Prix international de la Fondation Hasselblad en 2013. Fontcuberta est aussi l’auteur d’une douzaine d’ouvrages portant sur différents aspects de l’histoire, de l’esthétique et de l’épistémologie de la photographie.

Joan Fontcuberta | “The purge of the images”
At a time when so many images circulate and fascinate, precisely because they are so toxic and nasty, Sean Snyder carries out what could be thought of, in the clinical sense, as a purge. In the exhibition, he demonstrates this through the fundamental recognition of the raw materials of visual information (ink on paper, celluloid, magnetic tape, algorithms and pixels) and his handling of the rhetorics of persuasion.
Curator Joan Fontcuberta will discuss his interpretation of the works in the exhibition.
Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955) has developed an artistic and theoretical practice, which focuses on the conflicts between nature, technology and truth. He has had solo shows at MoMA and the Art Institute of Chicago among others, and his work has been collected by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Centre Georges Pompidou. Fontcuberta was the 2013 recipient of Hasselblad Foundation Award and has published a dozen of books about aspects of history, aesthetics and epistemology of photography.
