Film POP’s annual Bike-In screening is back, this year more extravagant and carnivalesque than ever.
Showcasing the “jungle thump” of DJ Oonga’s, Bia’s splendiferous bars and the Brazilian music of the
Tupi Collective during the day, the evening will culminate with a screening of Marcel Camus’ essential BLACK ORPHEUS (a.k.a. ORFEU NEGRO), a vibrant retelling of the classic Greek myth of Orpheus & Eurydice, set to the rhythms and sights of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival, and captured in glorious Technicolor
with wall-to- wall music by bossa nova heavyweights such as Antônio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá.
Winner of the 1959 Palme d’Or (and recently re-popularized, in no small part thanks to Arcade Fire’s
acknowledging of the film’s influence on their latest album Reflektor), Camus’ vision of carnival
remains to this day as dynamic and as thrilling as ever – a product of its time, certainly, but also one
responsible for popularizing Bossa Nova music in Europe and North America, as well as sparking a worldwide interest in Brazilian culture!
