Les résines à base de formol qui composent le bois pressé sont un agent ignoré, mais pourtant fondamental, du foyer nord-américain et de son imaginaire au milieu du XXe siècle. Irritant, allergène, neurotoxine et carcinogène, le formol sous-tend plusieurs aspects du confort, de la sécurité et de l’accessibilité de la maison moderne. Dans cette conférence, Nicholas Shapiro suit le formol à la trace, du schiste dont son précurseur est extrait, aux maisons vertes haut de gamme qui ont sacrifié la qualité de l’air intérieur dans la poursuite d’une efficacité énergétique accrue. Cette conférence explore ce dont le bien-vivre à l’air dans un mode planifié qui finance notre niveau de vie tout en nous étouffant, peu à peu.

The formaldehyde-based resins that bind pressed woods are an overlooked, yet foundational, agent in the homemaking and technological dreamworlds of mid-20th century North America. Formaldehyde, an irritant, allergen, neurotoxin, and carcinogen, undergirds much of the comfort, security, and affordability of the modern home. In this talk Nicholas Shapiro tracks formaldehyde from the shale pores from which its precursor is siphoned, to high end green homes that have sacrificed indoor air quality in pursuit for increased energy efficiency. This talk explores what the good life looks like in an engineered world that subsidizes our standard of living while ever-so-slowly smothering us.
