Sound Advice and Clear Drawings: Design and Computation in the Second Machine Age

That digital tools have changed the very nature of designing and making buildings is unquestioned. Yet formal innovation and ingenuity—and the technical competence needed to achieve those ends—are not merely a function of the virtuosity of form-making. Rather, they also make evident the dramatic impact that digital capabilities have on the roles, responsibility, and ultimately the efficacy of the architect in the system of delivering buildings. In this talk, Phil Bernstein will suggest that digital technology has been a catalyst in the redefinition of practice itself, trace the evolution of tools from CAD through BIM, and speculate on both next-generation tools and the methods of practice they may empower.

Les outils numériques ont changé la nature profonde de la conception et de la réalisation des bâtiments, c’est une évidence. Pourtant, l’innovation et l’inventivité formelles (et les compétences techniques nécessaires pour parvenir à ces fins) ne dépendent pas uniquement de la virtuosité dans la création de formes. Elles font également ressortir l’incidence marquante des possibilités du numérique sur les rôles, responsabilités, et en bout de compte l’efficacité de l’architecte dans le système de production de bâtiments. Lors de cette causerie, Phil Bernstein avancera l’idée que la technologie numérique a été un catalyseur dans la redéfinition de la pratique elle-même, retracera l’évolution des outils de CAD jusqu’à la BIM, et s’interrogera à la fois sur les outils de prochaine génération et sur les méthodes de pratiques qu’ils pourraient autoriser.
