Pour le mois d’avril, les RIDM proposent en première québécoise l’inoubliable et troublant documentaire Under the Sun de Vitaly Mansky le jeudi 27 avril à 20h au Cinéma du Parc.
La jeune Zin-mi, huit ans, fait preuve d’une inébranlable joie de vivre. Étudiante modèle, elle se prépare avec assiduité au sein de l’Union des enfants aux grandes célébrations d’anniversaire de l’ancien leader Kim Jong Il. Bien entourée par des parents heureux de classe moyenne, sa vie quotidienne est filmée pendant un an… sous haute surveillance.
Documentaire initié et approuvé par le régime nord-coréen lui-même, Under the Sun est l’oeuvre d’un cinéaste patient et méticuleux, attentif aux moindres failles dans le système trop bien huilé au sein duquel on tente de le faire travailler. Entre l’intervention constante des autorités pour refaire les prises si nécessaire et la fatigue qui s’accumule sur le visage de Zin-mi, Under the Sun parvient non seulement à proposer une vision de l’intérieur de la Corée du Nord mais aussi à retracer de façon bouleversante la transformation progressive et inévitable d’une jeune fille en outil de l’état.

For its April film, the RIDM is pleased to present the Quebec premiere of the unforgettable and unsettling documentary Under the Sun by Vitaly Mansky on Thursday, April 27 at 8 p.m. at Cinéma du Parc.
Young Zin-mi, 8, clearly loves life. She’s a model student who is preparing diligently with her cohorts at the Children’s Union for a grand celebration of the late leader Kim Jong Il’s birthday. With her happy middle-class parents by her side, her daily life is filmed for a full year – under close state supervision.
A documentary initiated and approved by the North Korean government, Under the Sun is the work of a patient and meticulous filmmaker with a keen eye for the smallest cracks in a well-oiled system that never stops trying to make him conform to its demands. Between constant meddling from authorities, who force him to re-shoot scenes, and increasingly obvious signs of fatigue on Zin-mi’s face, Under the Sun not only shows life inside North Korea but the gradual, inevitable and heartbreaking transformation of a little girl into a tool of the state.
