Après avoir échappé à une lapidation grâce à l'intervention d'un infirme, un vagabond sert de modèle à des vendeurs de statues du Christ et connaît diverses aventures avant d'accéder, dans une haute tour, au repaire de l'alchimiste qui deviendra son maître à penser. Celui-ci l'intègre à un groupe de puissants de ce monde avec qui il veut partir à la conquête de l'immortalité. Pour ce faire il veut prendre d'assaut la Montagne Sacrée de l'île du Lotus où vivent neuf sages qui en détiennent le secret. Cette quête difficile ne se termine pourtant pas par la victoire désirée.

A Christ-like vagrant and thief wanders through a perverse and unfriendly land until he encounters an enlightened one, who gathers the thief and six of the world’s most powerful individuals for a spiritual pilgrimage.
