The McGill Association of Student Composers presents its second Composer Forum of 2017: join us this Thursday at 5pm in room A-410 for a talk by visiting Russian composer Elena Rykova.
Elena Rykova: Speaking Objects
Elena’s recent research is focused on the link between musical cartography and choreography of sound leading to the phenomena of animating found objects by establishment of certain relationships with them within the act of improvisation. She will present a variety of her recent works, and discuss performers’ approach to her scores with collaborators Noam Bierstone, Daniel Añez and Felix Del Tredici.

Born in Russia, composer and performance artist Elena Rykova studied composition in Moscow State conservatory, Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and is currently enrolled in a PhD program in composition at Harvard University. In her music, she brings together instruments and found objects, extending one through another and creating performative situations with a strong visual aspect. Mapping the sound world on the paper, she draws her scores by hand, which are often exhibited independently in the art museums.
Among honors are: RheinSilber Award at New Talents Biennale in Cologne, Germany (2016), Berlin Scholarhip of Academy of Arts in Berlin (2016), Frederic Mompou International Award in Barcelona (2015), finalist of the biggest independent national Russian award in contemporary art «Kandindky Prize» (2014), finalist of Gaudeamus Prize in the Netherlands (2013).
