Actif sur la scène musicale depuis plus de vingt ans et considéré comme l’un des meilleurs Jazzmen au Canada (Toronto Star), Johnston a joué et enregistré avec beaucoup des meilleurs au monde, tel John Abercrombie, Don Alias, Shirley Eikhard, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Liebman, Archie Shepp, Sonny Greenwich et Slide Hampton. Sa musique a été décrite par les critiques comme "exceptionnelles dans tous les sens" et comme du "jazz canadien à son meilleur" (Globe and Mail). Il s'est produit en Amérique du Nord et en Europe, y compris au Festival de Jazz d'Antibes en France, au Umbria Jazz Festival en Italie et comme un habitué du Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.

He has performed extensively throughout North America and Europe including the Antibes Jazz Festival in France, the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy and as a regular at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.
