Formé au classique dès l'âge de 4 ans, le pianiste jazz et classique, compositeur et récipiendaire de plusieurs Juno, James Gelfand est acclamé par la critique aussi bien dans le monde du jazz que dans l'industrie du film.
Partie intégrante de la scène jazz canadienne des années 80 et 90, il a joué avec Sonny Greenich, Michel Donato, The Merlin factor et tourné avec ses propres projets, il se tourne vers le monde de la musique de films de 2002 à aujourd'hui participant à plus de 60 films et 200 épisodes télévisés.
James a participé à plus de 40 albums, dont 10 sous son prore nom. Nommé 6 fois au JUNO, il a reçu le prix pour l'album "The Merlin Factor" sur lequel il joue et a contribué aux compositions et arrangements.
En 1992, James remporte le prix du Festival de jazz de Montréal et arrive second à la "Great american Jazz Piano competition" de Jacksonville. Il a participé à d'innombrables festivals à travers le monde notamment en Suisse, France, Allemagne, États-Unis, et chez lui au Canada.
Il travaille actuellement sur son nouvel album trio avec Jim Doxas et Morgan Moore et est en tournée avec le quartet d'André Leroux.

Classically trained from the age of 4, as both a Jazz and Classical pianist as well as a composer, Juno award winner, James Gelfand has received critical acclaim in both the jazz world and the film industry.
A staple of the canadian jazz music scene in the 80,s & 90,s performing with Sonny Greenich, Michel Donato, The Merlin factor and his own groups, he veered towards the world of film music and from 2002 to 2106 scored over 60 movies and 200 television episodes.
James has performed on over 40 albums, with 10 under his own name. He has received 6 JUNO nominations for both solo albums and collaborative efforts and a JUNO award for The album “The Merlin Factor” on which he performed and contributed his compositions and arrangements. In 1992 James won the International Montreal Jazz Festival competition and placed second at the world renowned Great American Jazz Piano Competition in Jacksonville. He has performed at countless jazz festivals around the world, notably in Switzerland, France, Germany, the United States, and in his home country of Canada.
He is currently working on recording a new piano trio album with Jim Doxas and Morgan Moore of mostly original compositions and is touring with the Andre Leroux Quartet.
