Bas Princen: Volcano Walks

In this artist’s talk, Bas Princen will discuss the current status of the "17 Volcanoes project" and explore the resonances between the works of Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, works by early-twentieth-century Dutch photographers in Java (like van Nieuwenhuis), and his own practice. Although discovering new places seems impossible today, the talk takes as a point of departure the perspective that it is important and interesting to retrace, update, and reimagine the ways we have measured and depicted certain landscapes over time.
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition "17 Volcanoes: Works by Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, Armin Linke, and Bas Princen."

Bas Princen: Balades à dos de volcan

Lors de cette causerie, le photographe Bas Princen parlera de l’état d’avancement du projet "17 volcans," et évoquera les résonances existant entre les travaux de Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, les œuvres de photographes néerlandais du début du XXe siècle (comme van Nieuwenhuis) à Java, ainsi que sa propre pratique. Si la découverte de nouveaux lieux semble impossible aujourd’hui, la causerie prend comme prémisse la perspective qu’il est important et intéressant de reconstituer, mettre à jour et revisiter la manière dont nous avons décrit certains paysages à travers le temps.
