“Practice” is a series of noise sets exploring the experiential application of theories underpinning the transcendental properties of sound, such as cymatics, music therapy, sound healing, brain entrainment, and binaural-beat perception. Some of these theories are backed by substantial empirical research, others are not. Practice considers itself a qualitative and quasi-experimental research project, wanting to use the feedback from listeners as data, but not wanting to adhere to rote research methodologies, which may take away from engagement. Each session features a noise artist, who, informed by their own knowledge of sound and the principles of transformative noise, creates a meditative set intended to alter states of consciousness. Listeners are asked to meditate during sets to encourage awareness of being. The feedback from engaged listeners is essential in this project and will be used to inform future sets.
