Camp : une esthétique de soi, s'inventer une persona

Dans le cadre de l'exposition Camp Fires, Le Baroque Queer de Léopold Foulem, Paul Mathieu et Richard Milette, l'historien de l'art Karl-Gilbert Murray, met en lumière certaines caractéristiques de l'esthétique camp.
Par le biais de la contextualisation historique, basée sur des représentations visuelles provenant de diverses disciplines artistiques : des photographies de dandys, d’actrices hollywoodiennes, de bellâtres musclés en passant par des personnages de feuilletons télévisuels, des chanteurs androgynes, des drag queen flamboyants, des littéraires et des artistes en arts visuels, cette présentation tente de démystifier ce que Robin Metcalfe identifie comme des « pratiques signifiantes » et des « circonstances historiques de stigmatisation »; encourageant la capacité de s’inventer soi-même une persona de résistance par l’art.

Camp: an aesthetic of the self – inventing a persona
Presented as part of the Camp Fires exhibition, this lecture by art historian Karl-Gilbert Murray will focus on certain characteristics of the camp aesthetic. Camp is a genuine aesthetic of the self related to a type of gay sensibility that expresses the idea of taking a proud, provocative effeminate attitude. It will be contextualized through many visual representations from various artistic disciplines and popular culture.
The contextualization of history is biased based on the visual representations of diverse artistic disciplines: photographs of dandys, Hollywood actresses, muscled men based on television characters, androgynous singers, flamboyant drag Queens, intellectuals and artists in the visual arts, this presentation will attempt to demystify what Robin Metcalfe has identified as ''signifying practices'' and ''historical circumstances of stigmatization,'' encouraging the ability to invent a persona of resistance through art.
