Цареубийца/The Assassin of the Tsar (1991)

The Assassin of the Tsar (Russian: Цареубийца, Tsareubiytsa) is a film directed by Karen Shakhnazarov. It stars the English actor, Malcolm McDowell, and Soviet/Russian actor, Oleg Yankovsky. The film was entered into the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. There are two productions: one was filmed in the English language, which later was dubbed over the original Russian actors speaking in English, and one in Russian, in which Malcolm McDowell pretended to speak Russian in the other version and was later dubbed.
In the film, an asylum patient, Timofyev (Michael McDowell), claims to be the man who murdered Tsar Alexander II and his family in 1881 and his grandson, Tsar Nicholas II in 1918. Doctor Smirnov (Oleg Yankovsky) is convinced that the only way to resolve the mystery behind Timofyev’s claim is to enter into the patient’s fantastic world.
