Lors de la réforme de l’enseignement dans les écoles d’architecture américaines durant les années 1970, Kenneth Frampton a joué un rôle de premier plan dans la transformation du programme de la Graduate School of Architecture & Planning de Columbia University / Columbia GSAPP. Il a notamment créé et enseigné les trois cours de base du programme : le séminaire théorique « Comparative Critical Analysis », le cour d’histoire « Thresholds of Modern Architecture » et l’atelier sur les logements « Perimeter Block ». Dans les années 1990, il a commencé à donner le cour « Studies in Tectonic Culture », également appelé à devenir un cours d’histoire et de théorie fondamental du programme.
S’articulant autour des plans de ces quatre cours, cette exposition met en valeur les archives de Frampton – récemment arrivées au CCA – pour illustrer son influence dans le champ de l’enseignement de l’architecture sur plusieurs générations. Rassemblant dessins, maquettes, photographies, projets, essais, conférences, diaporamas, monographies, lettres et documents autobiographiques, cette exposition souligne la manière dont les méthodes et les recherches pédagogiques de Frampton ont fortement contribué à définir la discipline et la profession architecturales au niveau international.

Amid education reform in American schools of architecture in the 1970s, Kenneth Frampton was integral in transforming the curriculum of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture & Planning / Columbia GSAPP. In particular, he designed and taught what became three core courses: the theory seminar “Comparative Critical Analysis,” the history lectures “Thresholds of Modern Architecture,” and the housing studio unit on the “Perimeter Block.” In the 1990s, he started teaching “Studies in Tectonic Culture,” which also became a long-standing history and theory course.
Structured around the syllabi of these four courses, this exhibition showcases Frampton’s archive—recently arrived at the CCA—to illustrate his multi-generational impact on the landscape of architecture education. Encompassing drawings, models, photographs, proposals, papers, lectures, slide shows, essays, monographs, letters, and autobiographical documents, the exhibition highlights how Frampton’s pedagogical methods and concerns were instrumental in shaping the discipline and profession of architecture internationally.
