Sam Kirmayer was born in 1990 in Montreal. He began playing guitar at age seven and spent his teenage years performing throughout Quebec and Ontario with various bands. When he was nineteen, Sam began studying at Vanier College and is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree at McGill University with a major in Jazz Performance. He received the Oliver Jones Jazz Scholarship from Vanier in 2012 and the David Moyse Guitar Scholarship from McGill in 2013.
In 2014, Sam lead a series of tribute projects, each focused on the repertoire of one of jazz’s most influential composers. The first of these, The Music of Bud Powell featuring Sean Fyfe, Levi Dover and Afolabi Fapojuwo, is now available for download via bandcamp. In addition to his efforts as a leader, Sam is also a member of the collaborative trio, Sphere, along with Alex Francoeur and Levi Dover, as well as the Chris Maskell Quartet.
Sam has been teaching guitar privately since 2011 and at KOSA Academy since 2012. Recently he has given workshops at Vanier College and CEGEP Vincent-d’Indy.
