When the jazz pianist David Ryshpan and the afro-peruvian percussionist Kullak Viger-Rojas crossed Irem Bekter's path, one thing was certain - a new sound was about to emerge.
Irem is an eclectic mix of musical influences and traditions. Born in Istanbul, her multidisciplinary talent was nurtured in the UK before an extensive period in Argentina developing her own take on South American music. In Quebec since 2007, she founded the Irem Bekter Quintet, presenting over 35 concerts. With a scholarship from CALQ, Irem further explored the musical heritage of her native Turkey with such outstanding musicians as Ismail Fenicioglu and Ziya Tabassian.
This new project is a celebration of South American an Turkish music set in a jazz context, combining works from the repertoire with original pieces.
