Originally from Detroit, Khari Wendell McClelland has become a darling on the Vancouver music scene with reviewers lauding his performances as a clever mix of soul and gospel. Opening recently for Audra Day and Ms. Lauryn Hill, he is at home with R&B giants. This Black History Month, Khari is being celebrated for his Freedom Singer project, in which he recreates the music that fugitive slaves carried on their journey into Canada through the Underground Railroad. Sharing the stage with Polaris Prize nominee Tanika Charles, Khari crosses genres and generations, beautifully remixing the rhythms and folklore of early African-Canadians with contemporary sounds and stories of struggle and liberation.
