For more details: http://nextmusicfromtokyo.com/ Next Music from Tokyo (NMFT) is an annual tour that introduces Canadians to the most creative and skilled bands from Japan’s indie and underground music scene. The tour began in 2010 and brings a different group of Japanese bands to Canada each year. Tour organizer Steven Tanaka is a Toronto-based anesthesiologist who travels to Japan five to seven times a year, scouting the best possible line-up for each upcoming volume. With shows selling out yearly, NMFT is proof that music played with energy and passion transcends language barriers, and can be appreciated by audiences anywhere.
NMFT8 was held earlier this May but instead of waiting until next year, NMFT9 is happening right away in October. The five acts coming to Canada are:
Maison book girl: an underground idol group with a revolutionary sound and aesthetic. The music produced by Kenta Sakurai uses odd time signatures, hard-hitting syncopation and an icy melancholic tone that opposes the saccharine, bubbly and frenetic style normally associated with Japanese idol music. Having a level of maturity and sophistication unseen in other idol groups Maison book girl are attracting a legion of fans that wouldn’t normally appreciate or accept idol music.
https://youtu.be/rjikk6IP2F4 https://youtu.be/Kk5QYgxDpwE jizue: a 4-pc instrumental band from Kyoto blending post-rock with jazz. Immensely talented and having electrified crowds at every show during NMFT6, jizue return to Canada due to incessant requests to bring them back a second time.
https://youtu.be/vTDgInMDzR4 https://youtu.be/VonIRm0kNpI THIS IS JAPAN: incredibly catchy and melodic alt-rock with a twin vocal attack that explodes with furiously loud and chaotic guitars. Very few bands are as badass, fun and energetic on stage. THIS IS JAPAN will ROCK you so hard your grandchildren will want to buy their CDs.
https://youtu.be/6jU-GSHDwhI https://youtu.be/9Rlfth4qNWY Toranoko Rammy: four girls who call themselves a ‘3-D safari rock band.’ Because watching them perform live transports you to an African safari where wild beasts (the girls) are liable to attack you at any time. Nothing violent. Just very interactive with the band members stage diving, crowd surfing and performing amongst the crowd for an incredibly fun, ass-kicking set.
https://youtu.be/L9g7gvb4qxs https://youtu.be/0Yd9d7CKcNg Hitsuji Bungaku: a young 3pc band that plays a dark, powerful style of emo/shoegaze rock. Their music is characterized by soulful and intense vocals with soaring guitars and intricate bass lines. Originally an all-female group, the new male drummer is an 18yo prodigy who provides a massive boost in power and technical skill. Hitsuji Bungaku were the youngest band to perform at the prestigious Fuji Rock festival this year and are destined to become one of the best female-fronted bands in the world.
https://youtu.be/ZFqTyDZaKYM https://youtu.be/-WRrnZ5yd4o Next Music from Tokyo prides itself in showcasing a fresh and eclectic line-up of Japanese bands that put on a great show without resorting to gimmicks. Although this year’s line-up is predominantly rock-based, none of the bands sound remotely alike and are bound to fascinate audiences that keep an open mind. NMFT is the only tour in Canada featuring multiple Japanese bands and will continue its tradition of creating one of the most interesting and intense live music experiences of the year.
