Originaire de Philadelphie, Kurt Rosenwinkel s'inscrit au Berklee College of Music de Boston. Le guitariste décroche avant d'obtenir son diplôme pour partir en tournée avec le vibraphoniste Gary Burton (doyen de Berklee à l'époque). Au début des années 1990, Rosenwinkel s'installe à New York, où il ne met pas de temps à se faire remarquer grâce à son approche originale de la six cordes. En 1998, il lance un disque de standards jazz, Intuit. Deux ans plus tard sort The Enemies of Energy, son premier enregistrement chez Verve. Deep Song (2005) donne un nouvel aperçu de ses vastes capacités mélodiques et techniques. Enregistré en trio, Reflections paraît en 2009. Star of Jupiter suit en 2012.

Since Philadelphia native Kurt Rosenwinkel was first invited on tour by his dean, vibraphonist and jazz icon Gary Burton, in 1991 - prior even to finishing his degree at Berklee College of music - he has left an indelible mark on today’s jazz as a guitarist, a composer and a bandleader. Kurt’s first album as a leader, East Coast Love Affair (1996), featured bassist Avishai Cohen and his subsequent work with Mark Turner, Ben Street and Jeff Ballard, which culminated in his breakthrough album The Next Step (2001), became a modern touch stone for aspiring jazz musicians. Since then, Kurt’s stature has only grown, as exemplified by Eric Clapton inviting him to perform at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Madison Square Garden in 2013, and pronouncing him a genius. His latest album, Star of Jupiter (2012) features his New Quartet performing 12 original Kurt compositions.
