The Ancient Order of Hibernians, and other organizations, have organized a Walk to the Irish Commemorative Stone (The Black Rock) for over 150 years to remember those immigrants, Irish & others, who arrived on the shores of Montreal starting in 1847. Over 6000 dead have been estimated to lie under the rock. We remember them and the countless others who perished in the city and those who died helping the sick.
The Walk starts around 12pm after the mass at St Gabriel's. We will be greeted at The Rock by musicians from Siamsa after which a remembrance service will be held. Upon return at the church Paul Quinn of the Irish Embassy Pub has graciously sponsored a reception. Once again Siamsa will provide Irish entertainment.
The Walk is approx 2 km's each way. A bus will be available for those who would like.
This monument was the very first to memorialize the Great Hunger anywhere in the world. However it needs a proper space. Check out this page for the efforts to reach that goal https://www.facebook.com/groups/Blackrockmemorial/?fref=nf
IMPORTANT: This event will take place rain or shine!
