What started as an indie/folk duo, slowly evolved into a rock band with some jazzy elements when the duo met drummer, Jim Bloom. The group recorded 3 songs featuring saxophonist, James Delano in a studio at NYU before the addition of bassist, Sam Goldfine. Since Sam became a part of the band, the sound has grown into a heavier, grungy rock. The group has been featured in the Anti-Folk Festival at the Sidewalk Cafe, the NYC New Music Festival at the Bowery Electric, and has performed at other venues spanning Manhattan and Brooklyn including Cakeshop, the Pyramid Club, Rockwood Music Hall, The Red Lion, Glasslands, Palisades, Don Pedro and Greenpoint Gallery among many others. In July 2014, the Straws went on their first US-Tour with NYC-based musician, Cannonball Statman. The group is also finishing their first album, which was recorded in an analog studio in Woodstock, NY with Basement Floods Records in association with Jon Hildenstein. This album will be a better representation of the band's current sound, and is to be released January 2015, followed by a second US tour with Cannonball Statman. here's a link to a little bit of press we got from NY Music Daily about the upcoming album release: https://newyorkmusicdaily.wordpress.com/2015/06/23/graspng/ Cannonball Statman Cannonball Statman performs fast-paced, high-intensity acoustic music, involving surprising shifts in time and melody, and abstract, idiosyncratic lyrics. He became a frequent performer on the NYC Antifolk scene in late 2012, and started organizing shows and small festivals, such as the annual Cannonballfest, to help expand the scene and bring artists together. In December 2013, he went on his first US tour, with fellow NYC-based artist Phoebe Novak. He released his debut album "Icepick" the following Spring, and toured again that Summer, with The Grasping Straws. He continues touring and performing around NYC, in addition to recording new material, and drumming in rock and roll supertrio The Dick Jokes. "The music delivers the acoustic punk attack of antifolk by way of black metal; it's not unusual for a typical 5-minute song to run the BPM gamut and contain several distinct sections. Lyrically, he embraces smorgasbord surrealism, but the songs always resonate and the audience is never distanced from the youthful anxieties and aspiration that fuel his fervor."
