Ailie Robertson has been Artist in Residence at PRIM Productions Réalisations Indépendantes de Montréal since June. This is the premiere of 'Woodwork' for String Quartet, electronics and video, the project she has been working on during her time in Montreal.
Woodwork is a sound-video piece inspired by Quebec's rich Lumberjack history. It utilises, fragments and distorts traditional melodies, to create something radically new, allowing the piece to cross boundaries between traditional and contemporary cultures. Combined with video that further subverts and augments folkloric imagery, the result is a new installation that is grounded in tradition, but shot through with the adrenaline of contemporary influences; art that is both ancient and utterly new.
